Environmental Canine Services Demonstration

On Friday, May 23, the Millbury Public Works Department will host an illicit discharge detection demonstration and workshop by Environmental Canine Services (ECS), often referred to as "the sewage sniffing dogs" (see attached flyer).  In New England, ECS partners with a company called FB Environmental (see attached brochure); together, they are doing several demonstrations like this, and the Coalition is honored to host one.

For those of you not familiar with ECS or its services: the company owns a number of working dogs that have been trained through a comprehensive process to be able to detect the presence of human sewage in water samples and alerting their handler in a specific manner.  The benefit is that the canines are able to distinguish human from other types of feces, so are very useful in identifying cross connections (a common type of illicit discharge) or septic system failures as opposed to issues related to pet waste or agricultural practices.
